The City Attorney's office, or Law Division, for the City of Memphis is headed by the chief legal officer and is assisted by deputy and assistant city attorneys and other staff. 

The Law Division serves a number of vital functions for City government. Staff attorneys work in two basic areas: service and litigation. Attorneys working in the service area are assigned to provide legal advice to various divisions of City government as well as a number of boards and commissions. City attorneys working in the litigation area are responsible for defending lawsuits filed against the City. In addition, City attorneys are responsible for researching and preparing legal opinions that are requested by the Mayor, City Council or other City Divisions.
